Personally, I have always felt that female anime characters are usually been more sexualized in almost all contents they are used in more than the male characters. Unfortunately, I can't seem to understand the reason why it's so.

What do you think about how female anime characters are being sexualized?

Yes, I noticed that too, and not just in anime, bu in MMOs too... sigh smh

It's a pattern all of them franchise have decided to build up on and follow for some reasons I can't figure out yet. I've heard some people say it's good for anime while others have different opinions about it.

True. Though I'd hope it is not overdone.

We can all agree that they are highly sexualized, however, we might have different reasons. I think the main reason is the target demography and commercialization.

Some anime overdo it, there is no doubt, especially those late night ones, but not all of them are like that. I've watched shows where female characters are actually strong and well written.

With this generation, when are things or trends not usually overdone?

You have a good point there about demography and commercialization. It's why I'm not surprised with what they are now doing with anime porn too.

Prolly never. I think part of it comes from older anime industry trends where character design was heavily tied to marketing and fan-service expectations. Female characters often ended up being sexualized more because studios believed that would attract attention or sell merchandise. But at the same time, there’s been a gradual shift in recent years with more well-written female characters who are defined by their personality, goals, and role in the story rather than just appearance. Trends today definitely tend to get overdone once they become popular. Social media and global fandoms amplify everything, so when a certain style or trope works, it gets repeated a lot until people start feeling fatigued by it.

As a woman, I'll tell you why this is the case, and many people probably won't like my answer.
Patriarchy. For millennia, women have been subjected to being second class things-- objects of desire for men (particularly ones with wealth and/or power), so it's like second nature to objectify the female protagonists in our entertainment, and it becomes necessary to do so, just to compete within the Establishment (again, the ones with wealth dictate the rules we all play by).

Luckily, with all the chaos that's unfolding (at least in the West) recently, I feel that there is a monumental shift occurring culturally that's going to finally place women on equal grounds with men, dissolving the ongoing cancer of Patriarchy. At least, that's my hope. We're all human beings. We all have red blood coursing through our veins. We all require clean water to drink, clean air to breathe, and nutritious food to power these biological mecha we inhabit.

(And as a footnote here, please note that I am crazy-- but in a good way.)

I appreciate you sharing that perspective. I think the history of patriarchy and power structures has definitely shaped a lot of media and how female characters are portrayed. There’s no denying that for a long time, women were written more as objects or accessories than as fully developed protagonists.
At the same time, I also think culture is complex and constantly evolving. A lot of creators today are actively trying to write women as layered, flawed, powerful, and human, not just symbols or marketing tools. Change may not be instant, but it does seem like conversations like this are part of that shift.
And honestly, I agree with your core point, we’re all human first. Equal dignity shouldn’t be controversial. Hopefully the industry keeps moving toward more balanced and authentic representation.
Also, “crazy in a good way” usually just means passionate. And passion is how change happens.

It's because of the male gaze. It depends on the type of anime you're watching and which audience it's aimed at. If it's aimed at a male audience, the female characters will likely be sexualised because sex sells (no joke). This is present all throughout history, even as far back as tha Italian Renaissance.

That said, as a big-busty woman (my big-busty female friends feel the same), I like big-busty anime characters because it normalises people like me (especially when the characters aren't sexualised beyond their outfits, like blatant butt shots etc). IRL, people feel entitled to shame me for my body as if it was my choice; I have to minimise and hide my body as much as I can no matter the season just so I don't get the daily comments.

Yes. Sex sells. Although I dont have any friend-level acquaintances who are busty and voluptuous

Absolutely. I mean, just look at my avatar. I don't know why anime directors feel the need to give us a random beach episode loaded to the brim with fan service all the time, but oh well.

I don't mind the characters being sexualised though. As long as sex isn't the primary trait of a character, I find that it's more easy to ignore.

Anyone who body shames you is an idiot. It's simply because they have what they like and what they don't. So, because they don't like chubby ladies with big b00bs and back side, they tend to talk trash about them.

Never displease yourself because of what others think or say about your body.

I have to admit that I have always thought that females in anime, but not just in anime but also in MMO's as well, are very much over sexualized, and some anime tend to take it way over the top as well, I feel.

I have never understood why some tend to go way over the top, as I feel it is not always needed.

it really depend on the anime if it's a ecchi Anime then it should be expected but if it's a horror anime then it shouldn't be done at all but some anime do it to the point where I can even enjoy the anime it self any more and I drop it

What about the dangerous jobs that are only accepted by men like mining, oil refining, construction, sea freight, cops and a long etc.? men and women are different and obviously when society keeps developing (either in good or bad ways), for a long time men were judged by what they can provide, either money, power or something else in the table to be valued as a human being, so i'm not really into the patriarchy thingy.

Talking about femchars being sexualized, it's partially true, every show tries to emphasize something to make it attractive to the public that it's guided to and i feel that they look to activate something in their audience.. either way i do not watch a show according to some girl's skirt length or boob size.

For example cowboy bebop it's pretty darn good and has almost all kinds of characters, old people, young, lgbt, androgynous, chubby, skinny, etc. etc.

I would rather the fashions go along with the characters personality and combat capabilities...
