It's a genre where the story focuses on lighter themes and aims to "heal the soul". It means healing the viewers' soul. The stories can be either slice-of-life or with plot. An example of recent shows would be Yuru Camp as I said before, or Campfire Cooking in Another World, or Welcome to Japan...

Nowadays, I prefer iyashikei anime (healing genre). I just started watching Yuru Camp and now entering the 2nd season.

That's pretty normal, I too had limited access to the internet back then. But I guess I'm lucky to have some relatives that are into Japanese media and got exposed to anime/manga and able to borrow their DVDs and books. And local TV show anime shows alongside cartoons back then were a godsend haha.

A bit hard since most good classics are long running series and you want to recommend something bite sized for newbies to try. So instead of looking at an entire series, I recommend just focus a season/arc of a show like not in order: Dragon Ball Z Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya Prince of...
