Master Pinyin first
Start with Pinyin (the Roman letters for Chinese sounds). Learn all initials, finals, and spelling rules. Do not guess pronunciation from English letters. Practice reading Pinyin aloud every day before touching characters.
Focus on tones from day one
Mandarin has 4 main tones + neutral tone. Wrong tone changes meaning completely (example: mā = mother, mǎ = horse).
Technique: Listen and mimic native speakers a lot. Practice tone pairs (two syllables together). Use apps or recordings to check your tones.
Prioritize listening in the beginning
Spend the first 1-2 months mostly listening. Get used to the rhythm and sounds of Chinese.
Use slow beginner podcasts, YouTube channels with English explanations, or simple dialogues. Listening builds your "mental map" of the language.
Learn characters gradually and consistently
Do not try to learn all characters at once. Start with 10-20 common characters per day.
Use spaced repetition (apps like Anki or Pleco). Focus on the most frequent 500-1000 characters first. Learn radicals (building blocks) to help remember.
Build basic vocabulary and simple sentences
Learn everyday words and phrases first: greetings, numbers, food, family, directions.
Practice basic sentence patterns (Subject + Verb + Object). Do not worry about complicated grammar rules early — learn through patterns and examples.
Practice speaking early and often
Speak aloud from the start, even if alone. Shadow (repeat after) audio. Find a language partner or tutor for feedback. Do not be afraid of mistakes — speaking helps you remember.
Use immersion and comprehensible input
Listen to Chinese songs, watch beginner videos or cartoons with subtitles. Read simple texts with Pinyin. Surround yourself with the language as much as possible.
Daily consistent practice is key
Study a little every day (20-60 minutes) rather than a lot once a week. Review old material regularly. Be patient — progress feels slow at first but adds up.
Get feedback and correct pronunciation
Record yourself and compare with natives. Use a teacher or app with voice recognition. Fix bad habits early.
Use good tools Apps: Pleco (dictionary), HelloChinese or Duolingo for beginners, Anki for flashcards.
Resources: YouTube (Mandarin Corner, Yoyo Chinese), beginner textbooks with audio, Pinyin charts.
